Opposing superpowers play a deadly game of brinkmanship in this riveting Cold War thriller from the best-selling author of The Fall of Japan and Enemy at the Gates.

The Soviet Union delivers an ultimatum to the president of the United States Surrender unconditionally within 72 hours, or a secret weapon of unprecedented capabilities will take millions of American lives. President William Mellon Stark ran on a campaign of peace and kept his promises, slashing the military budget and pouring millions into domestic programs. Now the nation is years behind in the technology of mass destruction. Desperate measures are Stark's only options.

In Soviet Asia, a team of Special Forces saboteurs led by Colonel Joe Safcek attempts to vaporize the mystery weapon with a miniature atom bomb. Closer to home, the president stages an explosive hoax to justify evacuating Washington, DC. But as zero hour approaches, Stark realizes that it might already be too late and that he will bear the terrible responsibility of leading the United States into the ultimate confrontation.

The Tashkent Crisis (Audible Audio Edition) William Craig Steve Marvel Audible Studios Books Reviews

An entertaining cold war adventure/techno-thriller [that term was not in use in the early 1970s] from my teenage years.

The Soviet Union [remember them?] perfects a directed energy weapon [I think it was a laser], putting the US nuclear deterrent at risk and issuing the usual expected ultimatums to America's political leadership. So what is the USA to do?

Not a work of great literary merit, but it is entertaining and representative of it's time. Lean and spare, with good dialogue and characterizations, it comes in at app 250 pages. Compare that to the bloated 500+ pages for techno-thrillers which has become the norm since Tom Clancy became popular.

If you can find a copy, by all means get it. You won't be bored or disappointed. I read the first Dell paperback edition, which was released in late spring or early summer of 1972.

Well, don't be surprised that the fate of the US of A falls on the sagging shoulders of a seriously burned-out case previously consigned to the espionage scrap heap. Nor ought you to be surprised that he enlists the assistance of the inevitable beautiful female.

Not a work of great literary merit, but it is entertaining and representative of the genre back in the early 1970s. Lean and spare, with good dialogue and characterizations, it comes in at app 250 pages. Compare that to the bloated 500+ pages for techno-thrillers which has become the norm since Tom Clancy became popular.

I read this first Dell paperback edition, which was released in late spring or early summer of 1972, for the now seemiglu unbelievable tariff of $0.75!
I wish he had written more books . He is a good story teller.
